Born in Pontoise, Charles-Victor-Emmanuel Leclerc, who joined the army during the revolution of 1789, served with Napoléon Bonaparte during the siege of Toulon (1793) and during the italian and Egyptian campaigns. In 1797, he married pauline bonaparte and later took part in the coup d'état of 18 Brumaire, Year VIII (November 9, 1799). General Leclerc commanded the expedition sent to Santo Domingo in 1802 to repress the Haitian uprising and reimpose slavery. He died there, a victim of yellow fever, after having gained through treachery the surrender of the Haitian liberator Toussaint louverture.
